Are you suddenly an AR tour guide for clients? Here’s what we know about site visits with supers and owners and helping them go well. Much will depend on your platform. See Argyle Platforms for more details.

Preparation:

Choice of Site & time of day:

Choose a site that is covered. Site visits with outside visitors go best when you can have control of lighting conditions and protection from heat or wet weather. Factors to consider: Low morning sun can interfere with Hololens 2 sensors. Heat can lead to devices crashing. Water and electronics aren’t great together. You may want to go toward the end of a construction work day like 3PM when it’s less busy on site.

Site Setup:

Never align to the Construction site for the first time while people are standing around waiting for you. Even when you’re an experienced pro, it’s nerve wracking and suddenly your alignment skills are out the window.

Always align the day ahead and show up to site a few minutes early to turn on the device. Got HL2? Have fun watching Argyle locate itself to site. Trust us, the best AR experience is a “just works” feeling where all you do is put on your hardhat.

The Day Before:

You should be logged in on your AR device and have your model open and ready to go. Having your site model as the last open model will minimize any problems or downloading switching between users or models.

Battery Charge:

Plug in your Devices - note if you’re using the Trimble XR 10 there are multiple charging ports. Ensure you’re charging the Hololens computer, not the modulus bone conducting headphones. Know the difference and charge accordingly.

Charge directly in wall–the headsets require the juice. A bad experience we had was charging via desktop USB port. Instead of charging, it actually slowly drained all night. Learn from our mistake. Charge ahead.

Pocket Backup Battery:

Hololens batteries can trick you. Do yourself a favor. Plug in your backup battery and locate an 18 inch (short) USB C to USB -C cord.

Backup wifi: Why and How

While you don’t need to be tethered to wifi to use Argyle, you do need to be logged in.

Sometimes the device will log you out when you switch wifi or have a hard restart. I have arrived on site and been so annoyed that I was not logged into Argyle!

The best way to overcome this is to keep backup wifi like your mobile phone or better yet a hotspot on hand.

Understand how to log into wifi on your specified device. Go to the OS and find settings and wifi, enter your hotspot, log in, and you’ll be good to go.
